Welcome! New Barbecue Joint in Wilmington, Delaware, has familiar faces

Welcome to the "Small Wonder, Big Bites" blog, an offshoot of the Facebook page I started to categorize my articles about dining in Delaware and general dining trends. In case you're wondering, Delaware's nickname is the Small Wonder. Yes, we're small, but a lot is going on. We're also the First State because our delegates were the first to ratify the U.S. Constitution. And we're the home of President Biden when he is not in Washington, D.C.

(Like me, the President has two homes in Delaware — one in Wilmington and one at the beach. Needless to say, his abodes are on a grander scale.)

I've been writing about food for more than 20 years, and while my friends are often envious, it's not what it seems. For instance, construction and shipping delays have slowed the opening of many new restaurants. This is understandable. But it's a problem when you're writing about a new spot for a monthly magazine that goes to print several months before the issue's release.

This happened recently when I wanted to write about Chancery Market Food Hall & Bar. Unfortunately, due to delays, I had to switch to a new story right before the final deadline.  Someone suggested OMY Smoked BBQ, which has a new location in Concord Mall.

All the sides are made from scratch at OMY.

A highly recommend visiting this Brandywine Hundred barbecue spot. It's owned by Romeo and Lalaine Balan, who previously operated Philippine Smoked BBQ and Grill in Elsmere, Delaware, and Elkton, Maryland.

There are a few Filipino dishes, and I suggest trying the hand-rolled spring rolls, including the cheesesteak apps.

Handrolled OMY spring rolls are a Filippino touch.

OMY's stars, however, are pulled pork, ribs and brisket — the expected barbecue foods. Everything is made from scratch. In fact, the smoker is right on the sidewalk outside the mall.

I visited the restaurant, and Lalaine fed me — a lot. I had bags of leftovers. Take a look at the feast. This story will be in the November issue of Delaware Today magazine. I'll post a link when it's published.

Brisket, pulled pork and ribs are available at OMY Smoked BBQ in  North Wilmington.
