After a long wait — as in years — North Wilmington is welcoming Kid Shelleen's Charcoal House & Saloon, which officially opens on Oct. 19 in Branmar Plaza.
On Friday, I snooped around at a friends-and-family event — a test run to get the kinks out before doors open to the general public. My rationale: I needed to see the new space for a January story scheduled fort the January issue of Delaware Today.
The restaurant is owned by Xavier Teixido, who also has Harry's Savoy Grill, and Kelly O'Hanlon, Teixido's partner in the original Kid Shelleen's in Wilmington's Trolley Square area.
Big on Burgers
The menu at the two locations is the same. Since Kid's is known for burgers, I ordered the Cat Ballou. (Young 'uns probably don't know that Kid Shellen was Lee Marvin's colorful character in "Cat Ballou.")
My 6-ounce tasty, well-seasoned burger came with two slices of brie, mushrooms, tomato and lettuce. I also got a side of fried pickle chips.
My husband's grass-fed Farmhouse Burger was topped with garlic butter, aioli, tomato, lettuce and house-made bread-and-butter pickles.
The Same But Different
The color scheme is much the same, and a big bar greets those who walk in the door. As in Trolley, the kitchen is open to the dining room. But everything smells fresh and new.
Since Kid's is located in the old hardware store's space near Culinaria, it has room for a spacious patio, which will be an asset in warm weather. We could use more outdoor dining options in the northern suburbs, and a fence shields diners from Marsh Road.
When all the outdoor decoating is complete, it will be a casual culinary respite.
The partners have clearly worked hard to bring this restaurant to Brandywine Hundred — and that's a tale for my January story in the magazine.
Until then, grab a seat at Kid's bar and try one of the burgers. Let's hope this site also offers a Tuesday burger night!
